The FHSAA honored 24 of the state's top student athletes Tuesday night in Gainesville at the 21st annual Academic All-State banquet.

The honorees included six students from the Bright House Sports Network viewing area. Colleen Doherty from Academy of the Holy Names was named as the female Scholar Athlete of the Year and receives a $4,000 scholarship. Doherty, who excelled in basketball and track and maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA, will attend the University of Virginia.

Trey LaNasa of Fort Walton Beach was the male Scholar Athlete of the Year.

The other 22 members of the FHSAA Academic All State team all receive $1,000 scholarships.

While the FHSAA is most commonly associated with overseeing high school athletics, the recognition of the Academic All-State Team is part of the Association’s ongoing mission of building leaders through teamwork, sportsmanship and citizenship.

To be eligible for selection to the Academic All-State Team, a student-athlete must be a graduating senior, have a cumulative unweighted grade point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale, and have earned a varsity letter in at least two different sports during each of his or her junior and senior years. Members were selected based on academic record, athletic participation, non-athletic activities, community service and an essay. The 24 members distinguished themselves from among more than 150 qualified nominees attending 685 FHSAA member high schools.
