The F.C. Tampa U16 boys soccer team huddled over a television camera at a recent practice.

They peered into the lens and let out their team chat so loud you could probably hear it in Overland Park, Kan., the host site for nationals.

"It's all about heart on the field," said F.C. center midfielder Nicolas Arango.

Add heart to a ton of talent and you get a Southeast Regional Championship.  Winning the Southeast region qualified them for nationals.

"No one there is going to be a bad team," said F.C. Tampa center midfielder Alex Hernandez.  "So, you just having to show that you are willing to take the extra step and be willing to put it all out there on the field."

I’m gonna call it charisma," said Arango.  "You either have it or you don’t."

"They are playing for each other," said assistant coach Gilbert Gonzalez.  "One of the things that you will notice about this team is that these guys love and respect each other and they don’t want to let each other down."

The relatively unknown club started this run as the underdog.

"It was kind of unexpected," said F.C. Tampa goalie Livan Calvo.  "We’ve never gotten past the first stage. We couldn’t win the first region which was own right here in Tampa."

Gaining notoriety with every winning round, they won't be surprising people anymore.

"People say, where do you play, to me and I’ll be like I play down at F.C. Tampa at the Shimberg Complex," said Hernandez.  "They’re like, where’s that? People don’t really know about this place, but getting this win will put us on the map."

"What we’re demonstrating to everybody, is by teaching 11 players solid fundamentals and by them committing, you can be as competitive with any group with or without the resources," said Gonzalez.  "The wonderful thing about this game is you just need grass and a ball."

Their first-ever national title wouldn't hurt either.
