Buccaneers rookie quarterback Jameis Winston is getting a first-hand view at the new look Tampa Bay defense.

When asked who on that group was standing out to him, Winston responded, "everyone is good."

That's certainly the impression head coach Lovie Smith is hoping to leave on opponents this season after bringing in a wealth of new talent to a unit that finished 25th in total defense a year ago.

Along the line, incoming is defensive tackle Henry Melton from Dallas and defensive end George Johnson from Detroit. In the secondary, a group that is seeing daily competition for the starting spots, the team signed safeties D.J. Swearinger and Chris Conte.

"You can never have too many good football players, especially at the safety position," said Smith. "The way we play our safeties in the box, I think just about every year I’ve been coaching, about our fourth safety has started a game. You need good players at that position. We feel like we have two we feel comfortable with.”

Free agent linebacker Bruce Carter also steps in the middle to fill the gaps behind the team's defensive leader Gerald McCoy.

All in all, the group feels confident that they can lead the team, while the offense and their rookie quarterback continues to grow.
