For Dominick Ciao, 200 is just a number.

Ask him what it means to win 200 games and the Berkeley Prep coach quickly deflects credit to his players and assistant coaches.

“This is about, I’ve had great players who keep on making great plays," Ciao said. "I’m fortunate. And great assistant coaches who do a tremendous job of coaching. That’s what it’s been about.”

Those that know Ciao, know it’s about so much more. Plant head coach Robert Weiner was an assistant on Ciao’s staff at Jesuit and pinpoints one of the Bay Area’s winningest coach’s influence.

“It’s kind of this genuine caring that’s not this sappy caring," Weiner said. "And I think that’s where the world of Dom’s love for his players mixes with the macho world of football. Two hundred wins is way shy of the 2,000 kids he’s impacted and the 200,000 family members he’s impacted.”

To get the full scope of Ciao’s impact, you needn’t look farther that his sideline filled with former players.

“His entire coaching staff, I think I counted one time, there’s like 14 guys in coaching gear and every single one of them played for him," Tampa Bay Bucs head coach Dirk Koetter said. "Well, that says a lot right there.”

Koetter’s son Davis considers himself and his teammates the lucky ones, players who get to be coached by a Bay Area legend.

“He’s great at building men," Davis Koetter said. "And he’s taught me more about just life in general in the year-and-a-half I’ve been here than I’ve learned from a lot of coaches.”

That’s the beauty of Coach Ciao. Two hundred wins is impressive, but it’s the futures he is molding that will stand as his ultimate victory.

“There’s just a special touch of something in him that allows him, more than anybody I’ve ever known, allows him to press all the right buttons to get the most out of every single person that’s around him,” Weiner said.
