Autumn Dunn hears a voice in her head. It's a voice she wishes she could hear in person, but for now, her head will do.

The Newsome High coach hears her former softball coach Angela Slater – “tuck in your shirt, don't do that or they'll know you're going to bunt.” Slater, the former Riverview softball coach who lost her battle with cancer last month, left quite an impression on those that knew her.

"She would have definitely been here to give me a hug and say great job," Dunn said. "I would have definitely asked her for advice, where do we go from here, how do we keep it going?"

Last year, Newsome made school history when they won the Class 8A state championship. The Wolves got great news this week. When the newest round of national rankings came out, Newsome stood at No. 3. It's the highest national ranking in the history of the school and Coach Dunn thought of one person she'd love to share the news, one person she'd love to pick up the phone and talk to, but she couldn't. Her mentor is only in her head.

Newsome traveled to Riverview Thursday night for the first time since Slater passed away. It was also Newsome’s first game since they suffered their first loss of the season, a 1-0 loss to Plant City on Tuesday.

In the Wolves quest for another title, Dunn is drawing on inspiration from her former coach and she knows exactly what Coach Slater would tell her.

"I hear her always saying make sure you're being a good leader by example and make sure your pushing the girls to be better women, not just better softball players," Dunn said.
