Calvary Christian High School’s bowling team might be the best-kept secret in Warriors nation.  The team entered week four of the season undefeated thanks to their secret weapon, Dylan Powell.  Powell leads the team in scoring and had his best game last week in the team's win against St. Petersburg Catholic High School.  The junior credits his success to his unique approach to throwing the ball.

“It's like basketball, where you have one hand guiding the basketball and one hand throwing it.  So, it's not like most two-handed bowlers where they’re spinning with both hands.  I hold the ball with one hand while the other hand is spinning it”.

Powell said he has flourished in the lanes as well as the classroom because of the relationship he has built with Warriors varsity bowling coach and IT instructor Dan Simons.  Simons said he has seen Powell grow in the International Baccalaureate program and as a team leader.

“I had Dylan last year for a couple of classes. So, it's a relationship we've developed and it's great because that's what the school is all about- building relationships with our students.  He has stepped up this year to be a leader, which is important because we have such a young team.”

Powell's high score is 269.  He is constantly working towards the perfect game and said chasing that mark is what gets him going.

“The rush of getting strike after strike is like going at a very high speed and your heart keeps pumping faster and faster until you mess up or until you get a 300 game!”
