About 100 players, likely lower NFL draft prospects, are trying to turn the heads of over 300 NFL scouts.

The East-West Shrine college football all-star game is a proven starting point for guys trying to make it to the NFL.

Some of the greatest to have played the game like John Elway and Tom Brady have played in this all-star game and a handful of I-4 corridor kids are hoping to be the next diamond in the rough.

"It’s like recruiting all over again, coming out of high school, but for the next level," said Florida defensive tackle and Pasco High School grad, Joey Ivie.  "It’s a blessing to even be in this position."

“Oh man it’s crazy," said Ivie's linemate Florida defensive end Bryan Cox.  "It’s a one of a kind experience. I wouldn’t want it any other way. I earned my way here. I worked really really hard to get here and it’s a great feeling to be here.”

The East team is practicing at Shorecrest Prep in St. Petersburg, while the West is taking reps at St. Petersburg High.

After practice at Shorecrest, Ivie and Cox are flooded with attention from scouts.  Realistically they are late round draft picks. They know it, as does Kermit Whitfield.

At 5-foot-8 the FSU wide receiver and Jones High grad hasn’t ever let his height hold him back.  He won’t start on the brink of his pro dreams.

“I mean you can be tall, you can be big, you can be small," said Whitfield, who also could secure a spot at the next level on special teams.

"As long as you know how to play football. Basically being a short guy, I come out here and play with a chip on my shoulder. I see a lot of short guys in the league that’s doing it. I can do it too.

"Still some improvement to do, especially with technique and everything," said Ivie about the week leading up to the game.  "There’s a lot of us adapting to new techniques, fixing little things and critiquing little things to make you a lot better of a player.

The East-West Shrine game is the longest running college all-star football game in the nation.  Saturday the 92nd edition will be held at Tropicana Field.
