The Tampa Bay Lightning showed they're sellers by trading away another popular player on Monday. The Bolts sent center/forward Brian Boyle to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

In return, Tampa Bay gets Byron Froese and a 2017 conditional second round pick from the Maple Leafs. The Lightning will assign Froese, 25, to the Syracuse Crunch.

Froese has appeared in two games with the Maple Leafs this season. The 6-foot, 205-pound forward has skated in 58 career NHL games, all with Toronto over the past two seasons, collecting two goals and five points.

Boyle, 32, is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent this summer. He was in his third season with Tampa Bay and has 13 goals and nine assists in 54 games this year. He has appeared in 100 playoff games and will bring veteran leadership to a young Maple Leafs team that is trying to make the playoffs for the first time since 2013.

On Sunday, the Lightning announced that they had traded goalie and fan favorite Ben Bishop to the Los Angeles Kings.

Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman told reporters at Amalie Arena that his goal was to win the Stanley Cup.

"Some of the short-term objectives, I guess, I weigh what is the return versus what I'm moving out," Yzerman said. "We're going to do everything we can to make the playoffs. At least I'm going to make my decisions based on what gives us the best chance of winning a Stanley Cup whether that's now, a year from now or two years from now."

"Boyle is one of the best teammates I ever played with," former NHL player Patrick O'Sullivan tweeted. "Valuable and versatile on the ice and great for the room. The kids get a good leader."

The conditional pick in 2017 the Lightning will receive for Boyle will be the highest second-round choice between the Maple Leafs' own or previously-acquired selections from either San Jose or Ottawa.

Froese was originally drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the fourth round, 119th overall, at the 2009 NHL Draft.  He made his NHL debut against the Montreal Canadiens on October 24, 2015. Froese scored his first career NHL goal on December 19 against the Los Angeles Kings.
