Leadership and experience, two key factors Orlando Magic CEO Alex Martins used to describe the new president of basketball operations Jeff Weltman. Weltman says he wasn’t even looking to leave the Toronto Raptors, but that Orlando was an opportunity he could not pass up. A truly exciting time for his life.

“This a great day for me,” said Weltman. “For you guys it’s check out the new kid day, and for me it’s one of the happiest days of my.”

And with that Jeff Weltman was introduced as the president of basketball operations for the Orlando Magic. Weltman is starting from square one, he says that he doesn't even know the team yet and will have to rely heavily on head coach Frank Vogel to evaluate the players. It’s a process that could take time but Weltman knows where to begin.

“Developing our players,” he said. “I think that’s a huge piece for us right now. We have to develop our young guys, and we have to see what we have, and then we’ll know a little bit.”

With the NBA draft a month away Weltman will have to hit the ground running in preparation, with hopes of returning the Magic back to prominence after 5 straight losing seasons.

“Our job is to try and understand how we get better as quickly as possible, but not expediting it artificially,” said the former Toronto Raptors GM. “We want it to grow the right way, we want to do it the right way, we want to bring in the right people. I’m not going to make any promises or predictions that we can’t keep, but the only promise I will make is we’re going to dedicate everything we have to getting it done.”

Weltman says he hopes to create a structure in Orlando that no matter what your position is you have a seat at the table and is able to speak freely about what they think the team needs.
