Perfection.
For Calvary Christian, perfection came with a state title.
The Warriors capped off a 30-0 season with the Class 4A state baseball title in a 11-1 mercy rule win over Pensacola Catholic.
The Warriors became the first Florida team to finish a season undefeated since their opponent did it in 2013 when the Crusaders won the 4A state title. The win also ended a long Pinellas County title-less drought. Calvary Christian became the first county school since Dunedin in 2008 to win a championship.
It was also the first state title in school history in any sport.
Calvary Christian is into streaks.
From the 30-straight wins to four-straight hits in the first inning, the Warrior thrive off of continuity.
But the Warriors got off to a shaky start.
A batter hit by a pitch, a fielding error and a walk loaded the bases in the top of the first. But then starting pitcher Jonathan Fisher settled down and got out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts
Calvary Christian's bats were off to a hot start. Eric Kennedy led them off with a single to right field. And after he stole second base, Justin Bench drove him in with an RBI single. A throwing error by Pensacola Catholic sent Bench across the plate for a 2-0 lead.
Matheu Nelson made it 3-0 with an RBI double to right field, scoring Graham Hoffman. It was the fourth-straight hit by the Warriors. Calvary Christian wasn't done.
With bases loaded, Richie Mize drove in two more runs with a single to left field for a 6-0 Warriors lead.
Calvary Christian added three more runs in the bottom of the third, taking advantage of several Crusaders errors, including a run that scored when Hoffman was hit by a pitch with bases loaded.
The Warriors returned the fielding error favor in the fourth when Nelson dropped a ball in a play at the plate. It scored Pensacola Catholic's lone run.
