On a recent trip to fish the backwaters of Yankeetown we joined up with good friends Brian Stauffer of Fishead Kayak Charters and Ivy Harris to hunt down some redfish and snook. An extremely high tide that day allowed us to maneuver our kayaks way back into the backwater creeks of Yankeetown that are normally inaccessible.

Making our way throughout the area we managed to pick off a few fish, including a snook, on the outside before heading into the maze-like creek system. We even saw quite a few big black drum waving their tails in the air as the rummage for food on the bottom, seeing those 'broom tails' is always exciting. As the tide continued to rise we pushed further back into the creeks.

Unlike Tampa Bay where reds and snook have plenty of hiding places in the mangrove roots during the high tide, in Yankeetown the hard limestone edges prevent them from doing the same. As we worked the back creeks we picked off a few more fish including a small redfish an even bigger snook. It was another great day on the water with friends and you just can't beat the serene, and seldom crowded, backdrop of beautiful Yankeetown.
