First-year head coach Travis Roland and the Flagler Palm Coast Bulldogs defeated cross-county rivals Matanzas 35-14 Friday night in front of an estimated 5,000 fans at Sal Campanella Memorial Stadium on the campus of Flagler Palm Coast.

Matanzas' two-game winning streak over FPC was snapped and the Bulldogs now lead the all-time series 7-2.

Roland, who led Mainland's tough defense the past four seasons, watched his Bulldogs sack Matanzas quarterback Ryan Thomas seven times. FPC junior outside linebacker Nelson Paul was named the Spectrum Sports Player of the Game. The Bulldogs stifling defense only allowed 66 total yards and Matanzas was held to -21 yards rushing.

FPC backup quarterback Donovan Montoyo provided the Bulldogs with a spark, scoring on runs of 33 and 24 yards. Montoyo's 33-yard touchdown run was the highlight of the game as he dragged would-be Pirates tacklers 15 yards into the end zone to give FPC a 14-0 lead.

Matanzas was led by junior running back Trent Steward, who carried the ball 22 times for 44 yards. Steward also had a 69-yard receiving touchdown.

The game included 28 total penalties for 258 yards.

Flagler Palm Coast received the "Potato Bowl" Trophy at the end of the game.

Matanzas (0-1) is off next Friday and will travel to play Spruce Creek on Sept. 8 while Flagler Palm Coast (1-0) will travel to play New Smyrna Beach next Friday.
