It was a Monday night thriller on Spectrum Sports in Polk County, as Lakeland Christian narrowly escaped with a 48-40 victory over Berkeley Prep.

It was the first game in 17 days for both teams, but the offenses certainly did not show any signs of rust. The two teams combined for 735 total yards in a back-and-forth affair, adding another chapter in what's been a memorable series between the small school powers.

Lakeland Christian soccer star Tanner Molony, the Polk County Player of the Year last winter, showcased his football skills, earning Player of the Game honors. He finished with 315 all-purpose yards, with five receptions for 166 yards and three TD and 149 kickoff return yards, including a 98-yd TD return.

Southern Miss commit Tate Whatley turned in an incredible night of his own though. The QB finished 14-16 for 225 yards and three TD passes, while rushing for 77 yards, including a 45-yd TD run to make the score 48-40. If that's not enough, he also broke up a last-ditch Hail Mary attempt from Berkeley Prep as time expired.

But he wasn't the only star QB, as it was a coming out party for Buccaneers junior Joshua Youngblood. Entering the game with some questions marks under center, it seems like Berkeley Prep has their answer. Youngblood finished with 220 passing yards, 88 rushing yards, 75 kickoff return yards and five total TD.

Other top performers for the Buccaneers were JaVon Cooper (92 total yards, two TD) and Zach Mathis (eight receptions, 113 yards, two TD).

Berkeley Prep (1-2) has a bye this week before another key showdown with city rival Tampa Catholic. Lakeland Christian (2-0) will look for their fifth straight 3-0 start later this week vs. Orlando Christian Prep.
