Holy Names wins key district matchup over Tampa Catholic

The always intense rivalry showdown between Holy Names and Tampa Catholic had added meaning in their matchup at Crusader Castle on Tuesday night, with both teams looking to move into second place in 5A District 9.


Tampa Catholic has been impressive the whole month of September, compiling an 11-1 record entering the contest. They continued their strong play and won the first set 25-23, before the Jaguars stormed back to win three straight, 25-20, 25-17 and 25-20 to win the match 3-1.


Senior Katherine Pickard earned Player of the Game honors for Holy Names, recording a team-high 16 kills. Freshman Camryn McClendon was a bright spot too, notching 12 kills, her second-highest single-match total this season.


Colorado commit Elissa Alcantara showed why she's a Division-I commit, dominating over several different portions of the match. She finished with a season-high 21 kills. Seniors Olivia Wilson and Alexis Forrester had nine and seven kills, respectively.


Holy Names (8-3) is now tied with Cardinal Mooney with a 3-1 district record and ride a four-game winning streak into another key district match on Thursday vs. CCC.


Tampa Catholic (13-4, 2-2) will face Tampa Bay HEAT on Wednesday, in a game that was rescheduled because of Hurricane Irma.
