Two fourth quarter TD runs from Kathleen star junior Brendan Gant led the Red Devils to an upset victory over No. 8 Winter Haven, 21-14 at Johnny Johnson Stadium in Lakeland.

Winter Haven had a chance to tie the game, as they got the ball with :34 left and drove to Kathleen's 14-yard line with the help of two 15-yard penalties.  A hook-and-ladder play to Javeon Marlow picked up another 12 yards and a first down with :02 left but the referees determined that the clock ran out as the play was ending.

After a scoreless first quarter, Malik Williams burst through the right side for a 55-yard TD to give Kathleen a 7-0 lead.  A 2-yard TD pass from Randy Pritchard to a wide-open Josiah Williams evened the score before halftime.

Winter Haven star Javeon Marlow (verbal to Vanderbilt) picked up 70 of his 118 yards on a third-quarter TD run where initially it looked like he would be stopped at the line of scrimmage before he was able to spin outside and race down the sideline and give the Blue Devils a 14-7 lead.

That set the stage for one of the most highly-regarded juniors in the nation in the fourth.  After scoring on a 1-yd TD run early in the quarter, Gant lofted a beautiful pass down the sideline that landed perfectly in the arms of Almonte' Landy for a 44-yard gain.  His 3-yd TD run followed and provided the final margin of victory.

Kathleen (2-2) continues their recovery from an 0-2 start and start 1-0 in the ultra-competitive 7A District 7.  They'll travel to Bartow in two weeks and close their district schedule at Lakeland in Bryant Stadium on October 27th.

Winter Haven (2-2, 0-1) travels to rival Lake Wales next week before what will likely be considered a must-win game at Lakeland on October 13th.
