Spruce Creek’s improbable and magical run through the playoffs delivered a storybook ending Saturday night.

The Hawks survived two missed shots by Miami High on the final possession of the 9A state championship game to win 44-43 and claim their first-ever title.

Spruce Creek, which was making its first state tournament appearance in program history, got two free throws from sophomore Peryonna Sylvester with 9.9 seconds remaining to take a one-point lead.

On the game’s final possession, Miami High sophomore guard Jeanine Scott missed an open 15-foot baseline jumper and Colleen Bucknor’s put back attempt bounced off the side of the rim as time expired.

Sylvester finished the game with 13 points as did FAU-signee Jayla Adams.

The emotional finish left Spruce Creek’s players in tears, especially sophomore guard Delayna Gillard. Her father passed away suddenly in August and the team dedicated their season to his memory.
