Fred McGriff

Fred McGriff, Baseball Expert

Former Tampa Bay Rays first baseman and five-time All-Star Fred McGriff is a baseball expert for Bright House Sports Network, giving his analysis of the Rays and the rest of Major League Baseball each week on Toyota Sports Connection.

In addition to his many achievements during a 19-year playing career, the Tampa native was a finalist for Major League Baseball's Roberto Clemente Award in 2000. He is tied with Lou Gehrig for 21st place on baseball's all-time home run list with 493.

McGriff played with the Blue Jays, Padres, Braves, Rays, Cubs and Dodgers, advancing to the postseason five times. He was the Rays All-Star representative in 2000 and was named Most Valuable Player of the 1994 All-Star Game while playing with Atlanta.

Among McGriff's many contributions to the community was his annual charity golf tournament, which raised more than $1 million for the Tampa-based Pediatric Cancer Foundation.

A graduate of Tampa's Jefferson High School, McGriff was the starter at first base for the Rays' first four seasons. He remains Tampa Bay's all-time walks leader with 305 and is second on the Rays all-time list in home runs (99), RBI (359) and career batting average (.291).
