Getting in shape is the number one resolution for 2017 and the gyms are packed, but picking the best place to work out can be difficult.

Tips on how to find the right gym:

  • Take a tour
  • Test equipment
  • Find somewhere close to home
  • Read fine print
  • Don't rush into signing

Experts say to do your homework before becoming a member at a gym.

The said taking a tour is the first step in finding the right gym.

"We have everything from the treadmill to the stair master," Michelle Fitzgerald, a manager at  Anytime Fitness in Odessa, said. "We tell people you should always try before you buy."

Experts also suggest to try out the equipment. Also ask yourself, are these machines that you would use? Or would you prefer group classes? You want to make sure the gym has exactly what you're looking for.

Nicole Garcia was drawn to Anytime Fitness after trying out the place with a free pass.

"I'm not one for big gyms, I just like to stay small," she said.

Proximity is another factor when it comes to choosing a place to work out.

Garcia said she was thrilled that the gym is so close to her home.

"The closer it is to home, I know I'm going to be there first thing in the morning," she said.

Another tip is to make sure that any verbal promise is also in writing. According to the Better Business Bureau, it's important to have a written record so everyone has a full understanding of the terms before signing up for a gym membership.

Experts say When it comes to prices, it's important to take a look at the true costs for a membership, not just the introductory offers.

Before signing the contract, make sure to read all the fine print so you know exactly what you're getting into.

Many people don't know that when you sign up for any gym, you have three days to cancel, without penalties. That policy is state law, and it's included in all the paperwork.

Lastly, experts say don't feel pressured to sign up right away. If you need time, take a few days to think about it. You want to make sure that the gym you pick will help keep your commitment to stay fit.
