A new White House Chief of Staff has been named.

  • John F. Kelly is new White House Chief of Staff
  • He replaces Reince Priebus in role
  • Trump's new communications director had criticized Priebus

President Donald Trump tweeted Friday afternoon that John F. Kelly will take over the role.

Kelly is currently the secretary of Homeland Security.

Kelly replaces Reince Priebus. Priebus traveled with Trump earlier in the day to an appearance in Brentwood, New York. Trump thanked him for his service and "dedication to his country."

The future of Priebus became more clouded in recent days with the arrival of Trump's new communications director, Anthony Scaramucci.

Scaramucci had suggested in a tweet that Priebus was one of the "leakers" that Trump has railed against.

The New Yorker published a profanity-laced interview Thursday in which Scaramucci called Priebus a "paranoid schizophrenic."

Priebus told CNN he privately resigned Thursday.

Secretary Kelly will be sworn in on Monday. He released this statement through the Dept. of Homeland Secretary:

"I have been fortunate to have served my country for more than 45 years - first as a Marine and then as the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. I am honored to be asked to serve as the Chief of Staff to the President of the United States.

"To the tremendous men and women of DHS, I thank you for the opportunity to serve as your Secretary. When I left the Marines, I never thought I would find as committed, as professional, as patriotic a group of individuals. I was wrong. You accomplish great things everyday defending our nation and I know your exceptional work will continue."
