The Polk County School District will excuse all absences today due to the number of reported threats.

The school district posted on Facebook saying, "We recognize some parents have chosen to keep their children out of school today. Those absences will be excused. Again, all students and staff are safe, and we are taking every precaution we can to ensure their continued safety."

The school district said there have been threats of violence against several high schools circulating on social media.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office has investigated those threats and have not found any credible.

Officials say additional school district staff and law enforcement officers will be on site at schools today as a precautionary measure.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office commented on Facebook about the threats circulating against schools saying, "Yesterday throughout the day, law enforcement agencies all over Florida received reports of threats of shootings at schools in several different counties. We received many calls, emails, and Facebook private messages. We take all threats at schools very seriously, and we investigate them thoroughly to determine the validity of the threat."

The sheriff's office said many of the threats stemmed from a Snapchat photo threatening a "round 2 of Florida." The South Carolina student who posted the photo has been arrested and charged with disturbing schools.

The Polk Sheriff's Office asks the community to continue to report any suspicious activity or behavior, including social media posts.

"We continue to say to you, if you see something, or hear something, say something. We are proud of all of you for doing that. We are proud of our partnerships with the school board and our city police departments. We are committed to keeping your children safe," the sheriff's office wrote on their Facebook page.
