Deltona is one of the largest cities in Central Florida.

Although it lacks a downtown or city center, leaders are coming up with plans to change it.

The city is filled with intersections and lots of homes, along with strip malls.

Deltona is a bedroom community with close to 90,000 homeowners, the largest city in Volusia County.

"We're simply so large that unless we have one focus area that you we say ‘OK here we are. This is our town center.’ It may not be right in the center of the city, but it's our town center," said Jerry Mayes from business development.

Mayes said the area would be for parades, concerts and somewhere people can gather.

Deltona Plaza is the oldest part of the city and where Christmas parades were once held.

Now it’s a strip mall full of closed shops.

Mayes said they could revitalize it and build the center at that location.

One city commissioner mentioned a plot of land just west of Alexander Avenue. The city owns 122 acres, and it connects to city major thoroughfare.

A third option is to continue developing land around a recently-opened movie theatre, which has undeveloped land on both sides.

"We're looking for something of a walkability,” Mayes said. “In other words, people would be able to shop [and] park. Not have to drive from one spot to another spot."

Mayes and other business development leaders are talking about something along the lines of a Heathrow or Winter Park Village.

Groundbreaking on the project is years away since talks are only in the workshop stage.
