Some of the 1,200 students that attend the Boys & Girls Clubs of Lake and Sumter counties may not have a way to get to the after school program if the non-profit organization can't raise enough money for another van.

Organization officials said their drivers have had to do extra trips after two vans were taken off the road due to safety concerns.

"If we don't have reliable safe transportation, then we don't have kids at the clubs, and these kids aren't going to be served," said David Carmichael, one of the organization's 11 drivers.

Carmichael said he picks up about a dozen students from Beverly Shore Elementary in Leesburg and takes them to a local Boys & Girls club.

"They start with a snack, then they have time to work on their homework with some of our staff helping them with their homework questions," he said.

Organization officials say they were able to raise enough money for one van, but still need another one.

They say if they can't raise the $25,000 dollars for the second van, they may have to stop transporting some students.

"A lot of the help that they have for their academics comes from the clubs," Carmichael said.

"They have the chance to do their homework everyday and if they didn't have that chance to do their homework, they may not have gotten it done," he said.
