You know you live near a dangerous intersection when it's featured in a TIME Magazine article.

Bell Selmy, from Kissimmee, writes in this week:

"I remember reading how the intersection of US-192 and Vista Del Lago Boulevard was considered one of the most dangerous in America. Why was this the case? Has anything been done about it?"

John Martin recently moved to the Vista Del Lago community off US-192 earlier this year and has already seen his share of problems at the closest intersection to his community, US-192 and Vista Del Lago Boulevard.

"People do drive differently here than they do in New Hampshire," Martin said. "A lot more aggressive, a lot (faster)."

Martin said that even in the short time he has been living there, he has seen some activity.

"It is a pretty big intersection and a lot of people get frustrated waiting for the lights, waiting for the lights to change," Martin said. "I've come home a couple of times and seen a couple of bad accidents."

Martin still seemed stunned, however, when he was told the intersection was, at one time, considered one of the most dangerous in America.

"I would never have guessed it," he said. "I could probably think of other intersections that are even worse."

So, the big question is: Is this really one of the most dangerous intersections in America?

TIME Magazine seemed to think so in December 2014 when it ranked the intersection as one of 12 most dangerous intersections in the United States with at least 6 fatalities occurring at those intersections.

The TIME study focused on the time period between 2003 and 2012, using longitude and latitude coordinates to count the number of fatal accidents that occurred within a 150-feet radius. US-192 and Vista Del Lago Boulevard was one of four intersections in the study that were located in Florida, two of which were in Central Florida. The other intersection was State Road 50 and State Road 436.

Residents should be pleased to know that a complete reconfiguration has been occurring along US-192 since that time. The Florida Department of Transportation shared before-and-after pictures of the intersection and the changes that have taken place.

Those improvements include the widening of US-192 from four to six lanes in 2014, the reconstruction of the actual intersection, new traffic signals, signs and pavement markers.

So, FDOT and the city of Kissimmee are going to great lengths to make sure the intersection never shows up on the list of most dangerous intersections again.
