On Jan. 10, Woodrow Sweet and several other firefighters responded to a house fire and found dozens of animals inside.

Firefighters worked “feverishly” to grab as many animals as they could.

However, firefighters were unable to save all the animals. Many of them died because of the smoky conditions, according to BCFR.

Sweet was so “moved by the loss of animal life that morning” that he adopted one of the surviving dogs from the South Brevard Animal Shelter.

Smokie, an Australian Shepherd, become the newest member of the Sweet family.

BCFR posted the story about Sweet on its Facebook page Wednesday.
