A Brevard County music teacher has been nominated for a music educator of the year Grammy.
- Music teacher Joani Slawson nominated for Grammy
- Slawson is a semifinalist for music educator of the year
- Slawson will find out if she's in the top 10 in December
“I was astonished, it was exciting, I was overjoyed,” said Joani Slawson, a Saturn Elementary School teacher.
Slawson is one of 25 semifinalists across the country nominated for the award, and her students have no doubt she’s deserving.
“I was excited, I am so proud of her because not many teachers can do what Mrs. Slawson can do,” said fifth-grader Bella Foster.
Slawson’s interest in music began in high school, and after a 20-year career, her passion is still teaching.
“I always thought I’d be a high school choral director, but then I started in Elementary school and I’ve been there ever since,” Slawson said.
More than a few people have noticed her drive and determination. It was just a few weeks back when she got the call that she was nominated and a semifinalist.
But it’s still a waiting game — Slawson will find out if she’s made it to the top ten in December.
“What’s most important for me is to instill a lifelong love of music and that they can find their passion and what really moves them in this music room,” Slawson said.
