Some AT&T cell users in parts of Volusia County were without 911 service Thursday.

  • 911 service issue affected AT&T cell customers
  • Flagler County also reporting 911 service issues

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office said some customers in the area of Tiger Bay Road were unable to call 911 from their cell phones after lightning strikes in the area took out service.

Until the issue was resolved, customers who couldn't reach 911 with their cell phones were encouraged to use a land line to call 911.

Service was restored early Thursday afternoon, the Volusia Sheriff's Office said.

Just as that 911 outage was resolved, the Flagler County Sheriff's Office posted on its Facebook page that that some AT&T cell customers in that county were unable to call 911.

However, not too long after the Facebook post, the Flagler Sheriff's Office denied there were issues with 911 service in that county. The Sheriff said the office posted the note to warn residents after they found out about the Volusia County outage.

Earlier this month, an AT&T outage took out 911 service to cell phone customers in six states. In the aftermath, Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs called on the Federal Communications Commission to look into how cell phone companies notify customers of important outages.

CLARIFICATION: This story has been updated and clarified to reflect information from the Flagler County Sheriff, who denied Thursday afternoon that Flagler AT&T cell phone customers couldn't reach 911, despite the Facebook post.
