A teenager was hit and killed Friday by a SunRail train in Sanford.

The crash happened at about 5:45 p.m. near Dixie Way and Historic Goldsboro Boulevard.

Authories said Marcees Kilpatrick, 13, was walking his bike across the tracks when the train clipped him. Police said the teen lived nearby.

Emotions were high as neighbors tried to figure out what happened.

"Was he trying to cross or what happened," said Kim Williams. "Maybe he thought he could make it, I just don't know."

Members of the community said kids in the sometimes cross the track to go between neighborhoods.

The train was carrying about 62 passengers at the time of the crash. There were no injuries reported on board the train, according to Bianca Gillett, the public information officer for the Sanford Police Department.   

SunRail trains were delayed by more than an hour Friday because of the crash.

Police interviewed members of the community, the train conductor and also took statements from the people who were on the train.

Police said there is video of the incident, but it will not be released at this time.

Police also want to remind everyone about the dangers of trains. They are also encouraging parents to tell their children to never cross an unmarked track.
