Sumter County is seeing a rise in daytime residential burglaries, and they suspect they're connected to burglaries in the Tampa Bay area.

  • 5 daytime residential burglaries in Sumter County since May 16
  • Burglaries occurred in Bushnell, Beville's Corner, Tarrytown areas
  • Burglars may be operating out of the Tampa Bay area

The Sumter County Sheriff's Office says there have been five burglaries in the southern portion of the county since May 16, in the areas of Bushnell, Beville's Corner and Tarrytown.

Investigators believe the burglars may be tied to a rise in daytime burglaries in the Tampa Bay area.

They say the burglars are targeting jewelry, coins and firearms, all taken while homeowners are at work during the day.

The sheriff's office issued the following tips to keep your home safe:

  • Make sure yard gates are closed
  • Activate residential alarms
  • Make sure video surveillance is active
  • If you see an unfamiliar or suspicious vehicle in your area, call 911 and have a deputy come check it out
  • Have a neighbor watch your home while you're away.
