An Osceola County Sheriff's Office deputy has bonded out of jail after being accused of physically attacking his wife.

Richard Ortiz, 34, has been with the Sheriff's Office for two-and-a-half years. He previously worked for the Miami-Dade Police Department for about nine years.

Ortiz has been placed on administrative leave without pay for alleged domestic violence.

"These things happen to them just like anybody else, but the law is for everybody," Sheriff Russell Gibson said.

According to an arrest report, the deputy's brother told detectives that Ortiz and his wife were arguing in the driveway when he dragged his wife out of a car by the arms. The two later went inside of the home where Ortiz threw a dining room chair to the ground.

Ortiz then reportedly pushed his wife against the wall. She slapped him on the face, a report states.

Ortiz, according to the report, then said: "Oh, so that's how it's going to be," and then slammed her head on the wall.

"I don't condone anything when it comes to domestic violence," Gibson said.

The deputy's wife was not cooperative with authorities and denied the argument turned physical. Detectives took pictures of the injuries on the woman's arms, which were consistent with a hand grab.

"There are times when law enforcement officers get arrested," Gibson said. "As a law enforcement officer myself, I've arrested deputies and correctional staff — and those aren't easy cases. But that just comes to show that the law pertains to everybody equally and fairly. Nobody is above the law. Understand that."

The Orlando Police Department will conduct a criminal investigation and then the Osceola County Sheriff's Office will conduct an internal investigation. The deputy was originally booked at the Osceola County Jail, but he was later transferred to Orange County to avoid any conflict of interest. He bonded out Tuesday.

Gibson said possible discipline for Ortiz depends on the outcome of the investigation.
