Anthony Scaramucci has been removed as White House communications director.

  • White House statement said he wanted to give Kelly 'a clean slate'
  • Scaramucci had been in role for less than 2 weeks

The ouster comes at the request of President Donald Trump's chief of staff, John Kelly, The New York Times first reported. A three-sentence statement from the White House said Scaramucci "felt it was best" to give Kelly a "clean slate."

"We wish him all the best," the statement said.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said during a Monday afternoon press briefing that Scaramucci doesn't currently have any other role in the Trump administration.

The New York financier had been in the role for less than two weeks.

Just days after his appointment, Scaramucci gave a profanity-filled interview, slamming former Chief of Staff Reince Priebus and Steve Bannon, the White House's chief strategist.

"The President certainly felt that Anthony’s comments were inappropriate for a person in that position," Huckabee Sanders said.

Scaramucci's appointment led to the departures of both Sean Spicer, the former White House press secretary, and Priebus.

Sanders said during the briefing that Scaramucci's departure was a "mutually agreed" understanding.

"We're moving forward to focus on the jobs outside of this building, not within it," she said.

Scaramucci is the second White House communications director to leave in the past six months. Mike Dubke resigned in May. Spicer oversaw some of the responsibilities while the job was vacant.
