Rep. Steve Scalise, the Louisiana congressman who was shot by a gunman on a Virginia baseball field, is back in a hospital ICU.

MedStar Washington Hospital Center said Scalise was readmitted into the Intensive Care Unit Wednesday night because of infection concerns.

He's in serious condition.

Scalise was shot by gunman James Hodgkinson was shot last month while he and other Republican members of Congress were practicing for the annual charity baseball game.

The hospital said the bullet had traveled from Scalise's left hip across his pelvis, fracturing bones and injuring internal organs.

It was expected that Scalise would have to have several surgeries.

Two Capitol police officers were shot as well, along with a Congressional aide and a lobbyist.

The officers were at the practice because Scalise, the House Majority Whip, was present at the game. If they hadn't been there, more people would likely have been shot.

Hodgkinson died from gunshots by the officers.

MedStar says it will release another update on Scalise's condition Thursday.
