A small depression opened up on the Wekiva Parkway (SR 429) in Orange County after Hurricane Irma.

  • Small depression opened on NB State Road 429 in Apopka
  • Officials say it's damage from Irma, not a sinkhole
  • Expressway Authority hopes to have the road complete open in 2 weeks

The 3 foot in diameter, 10 foot wide depression was discovered on Thursday, September 14 near the Kelly Park Road exit of northbound State Road 429 in Apopka.

The depression is only a few miles away from two nearby sinkholes that opened up this week off Kelly Park Road in Apopka. One of the sinkholes swallowed part of a home.

However, officials do not think this depression is the beginning of a sinkhole, even though it is damage from Irma.

On the 429, crews have the area down to one lane on the shoulder for safety and have hired contractors to fix the problem.

“Our system, 118 miles, fared really well given the severity of the storm. So really to have just a little damage like this, not so bad in the general scheme of things," said Brian Hutchings, senior communications specialist with the Central Florida Expressway Authority.

Crews are pumping in a mixture of sand, cement and water to fill in the depression, which is about 10 inches deep.

The Expressway Authority is hoping to have both lanes open again in the next two weeks.
