The 15-year-old boy who suffered head injuries following a jet ski crash in Windermere has died, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

Nick Lott died just a few hours after being airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children after incurring life-threatening injuries, including a head injury, on Sunday afternoon on Lake Whitney.

The crash happened just after 2 p.m. when Lott crashed into a boat dock on the lake.

The watercraft he was riding was owned by a family friend.

Windmere High School's principal released a statement through Facebook Monday:

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family as they go through this difficult time. Students can have varied reactions to the death of a peer. Any reaction is normal in the grief process and I encourage you to openly discuss with your child their feelings and reaction. We have grief counselors available on campus for students and staff if they need support or just want to talk to someone"

CORRECTION: A previous version of this report said the boy was 17 years old. He is 15. The article has been corrected.
