DeLand Police say the 15-year-old was charged Tuesday with a misdemeanor for disrupting an educational institute.
A teacher informed a school resource officer that a student was seen with a possible handgun. Immediate action was taken, and the school was placed under lockdown.
The teen was taken into custody, and officers reportedly found a cellphone case that looked like a pink, novelty handgun when they searched the student.
Officers further searched the school and ensured there were no additional threats, authorities say.
Police Chief Jason Umberger emphasized in a news release the importance of communicating potential dangers to officials, especially in light of the Parkland school shooting.
