Celebrities are lining up behind students organizing nationwide marches next month against gun violence and pushing gun control.

  • Oprah Winfrey, George and Amal Clooney donating $1 million
  • Marches organized by students to be held next month
  • Clooneys say they will march with the students

George and Amal Clooney donated $500,000 Tuesday to "March for Our Lives."

The Clooneys said they were inspired by the "courage and eloquence" of the survivors-turned-activists of the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting.

Students plan to mobilize a march on Washington March 24 and other cities.

Hours later, Oprah Winfrey tweeted that she would join the Clooneys by matching their donation, likening the student organizers to the Freedom Riders of the 1960s:

The Clooneys said they were donating the money in the names of their eight-month-old twins.
