By law, the President must take his Oath of Office before noon on January 20. But since the 20th fell on a Sunday this year, there was a private ceremony on that date, followed by the public ceremony held on Monday, Jan. 21. A week of festivities includes the Presidential Swearing in Ceremony, Inaugural Address, Inaugural Parade and a night of Inaugural Balls and galas honoring the elected President of the United States.
On January 3, 2013, the 113th Congress began as every two years on January 3—per the Twentieth Amendment to the Constitution—a new Congress is established. Members of that Congress include:
Senators who were not up for re-election (every two years only one-third of the Senate is up for re-election)
Newly elected Senators
Newly elected Representatives
