It was a packed house here inside DeLand High School’s gymnasium on Friday as the first of two days of State Weightlifting kicked off.

The 2A competition opened up in the morning with the largest weight classes up first.

On the 183 mats it was a senior who dominated from start to finish in St. Cloud’s Josh Piasecki –lifting a personal best on the bench (355) and setting a new state record in the clean in jerk (355) for a total of 710.

Lake Region’s Javon Wilson handled the 219lb class lifting 345 on the bench—then found himself tied with Bulldogs Tyler Williams—before powering up a state record of 380 on the clean and jerk for a day today of 725.

This was Wilson’s second straight title.

The back end of the day brought two more local champs—both from Volusia County –Joshua Hubbard lifting a total of 520lbs to win it all in 129-weight class.

And after battling back from injury Derek Beauchamp found himself on top of the podium lifting 645lbs to take the 169 group.

The state-wrestling tournament will continue Saturday morning with the 1A classification.
