ORLANDO, Fla. – Following in Aquatica Orlando's footsteps, Discovery Cove has become a certified autism center, parent company SeaWorld announced Tuesday.

  • Discovery Cove now certified autism center
  • Staff underwent special sensitivity, awareness training
  • Other SeaWorld parks Sesame Place, Aquatica also certified centers

Discovery Cove becomes the first all-inclusive day resort and animal interaction park in the U.S. to be certified.

"Discovery Cove has long been recognized for its adventure-filled yet relaxed environment with a variety of open, clear space that attractions and services more accessible and reduces sensory overload for guests with cognitive disorders," Discovery Cove president Kyle Miller said in a statement. "Autism certification is a natural step for us as we continue to create safe and meaningful experiences for all of our guests."

To receive the distinction, the park worked with International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) to give staff sensitivity and awareness training. The board also conducted an onsite review of the park and guest experiences.

Discovery Cove staff must undergo training every two years to keep certification.

A sensory guide and other pre-planning resources will be available on the park's website. The park will also have a quiet room that features adjustable lighting and seating.

SeaWorld now has three parks that are certified autism centers. Sesame Place in Pennsylvania received certification last April, followed by Aquatica in January of this year.
