TAMPA, Fla. — A woman is recovering after deputies say she was robbed at gunpoint, slapped the gun out of the suspect's hand, and was struck in the leg.

It happened on the 4800 block of Grove Point Drive in Tampa.

Joe Strigle was having breakfast when he heard a commotion across the street early Saturday morning.

"It don't happen in this neighborhood. You never see the police cars hardly out here," Strigle said.

That's when he got a call from his long time neighbor, who said she'd been shot.

"I couldn't believe it. I said, 'This just don't happen here,'" Strigle explained.

The Sheriff's Office says that around 6 a.m, someone robbed Strigle's neighbor at gunpoint while she was outside feeding neighborhood cats. She gave him a small amount of cash and he started to walk away.

The Sheriff's Office says for unknown reasons she followed the suspect, and that's when he pointed his gun at her.

"She had the tray in her hand and she threw it at him and knocked the gun out of his hand and then he ran," Strigle said.

The Sheriff's Office said as the gun fell, it fired and struck the victim in the leg. They say she's in stable condition. The robber hasn't been found.

Neighbors say this is really unusual. They say the neighborhood is normally very quiet.

"You're not here unless you’re supposed to be here, so it's just a bit odd to hear there had been a shooting on the street," Janna Eveland said.

Strigle said his neighbor is recovering in the hospital and is doing OK. He said she is eager to get home.

"She told them she wants to go home but they said not today," Strigle explained.

Anyone who knows anything about this incident is asked to call the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office or Crime Stoppers.
