Even though school is out for the summer, administrators from Hillsborough County Public Schools are working now to make sure their students have experienced educators in the classrooms.

It's a priority for all principals in the district. But it's even more crucial at the "achievement schools" which have been identified by the district as the ones with the highest needs.

A hiring event was held on Monday at the county's Instructional Services Center to hire teachers for open positions at these schools. Principals interviewed the candidates and were able to hire them on the spot for the upcoming school year.

"The applicants get to come here and meet all of us at one time, so it saves them time from running around from school to school," said Jaime Gerding, the principal at B.T. Washington Elementary.

"We've checked their references, gone through their resumes, and these are our strong applicants," said Jacqueline Haynes, the Director of Hillsborough County Achievement Schools.

Administrators are working with the achievement schools individually to ensure educators get the help they need to make students successful.

"We see that our highest needs schools are not meeting the standards of testing or they are not achieving as well as they should," said Haynes.

"We get much more one on one support from the district," said Gerding. "We're able to really support those kids at our specific site based on what our specific school needs."

The district will be holding other hiring events throughout the summer. For more information, click here.
