TAMPA, Fla. -- The Hillsborough County School District is prepping for the new year by training new security guards.

  • More than 150 armed guards will be present on all public school campuses
  • Elementary schools will also have guards
  • Applicants must receive weeks of training before being considered

Since the Parkland school shooting in February, Florida legislation requires that all schools are to have an armed guard.

The Hillsborough County Schools district has been doing its training program for years. However, they need a lot more officers to cover every elementary school.

The district says that not only do they need guards to protect students, but also as mentors and advocates.

"I always say it is here, or it's not here. It's either in you to act or it's not. And I know it's in me to act," said Gray Gobernik, who is training in the program.

The guards will be present in all Hillsborough County schools in August.
