CAPE CORAL, Fla. — Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Thursday that he is taking action on common core standards in Florida's education system.

  • Governor signs executive order to eliminate common core
  • Says goal is to make sure educators aren't "teaching to a test"
  • Pasco County Superintendent says governor should consider time invested in common core

The governor said he is signing an executive order eliminating education that involves those standards.

Commissioner of Education Richard Corcoran was there for the announcement, which was made at a high school in Cape Coral.

The governor outlined his involvement in the process.

"The executive order will require the commissioner to provide a road map of authentic Florida-based standards," DeSantis said.

"(Corcoran) is also going to tell us how we can increase the quality of our instructional curriculum," the governor said.

DeSantis said the goal is to streamline testing and make sure that educators aren't "teaching to a test."

Pasco County Superintendent said he supports streamlining testing but said that a lot of time has gone into implementing common core.

"I ask Gov. DeSantis and Education Commissioner Corcoran to consider the amount of time, funding, and effort teachers, administrators, and school districts have invested in professional learning, curriculum, materials, and resources that align with our current standards," said Superintendent Ken Browning.

"I understand that parents have had difficulty grasping some of the standards, and there may be a need to adjust some of them," he said.

DeSantis said he also wants to talk with teachers and students about future plans.
