They were supporting Dr. David LaRoche, the principal of Hudson High School.

He is running for superintendent.

On Tuesday, Superintendent Kurt Browning reassigned LaRoche to another school as an assistant principal.

Those rallying feel this was a political move against his opponent in an upcoming race.

“It just erupted on social media,” said Bridget LaRoche, David’s wife, who organized the rally. “The entire community is outraged by this. There are a ton of teachers, students, out here all supporting my husband.”

Superintendent Browning told the Tampa Bay Times, “the current principal is not supportive of the direction that the school board and I are going with our schools.”

LaRoche has been principal at Hudson High since 2008. He’s been transferred to Mitchell High School.

Also running is Bayonet Point Middle teacher Cynthia Thompson.

Qualifying for the ballot begins on Monday. The election will be held in August.
