1. The 22nd Annual Treasure Island Sport Kite Competition and Festival is January 19-20, with choreographed musical kite "ballet" performers pitted against one another for "TOP KITER: MASTER OF THE GULF WIND" (OK, I made that moniker up, but we could make it stick)

2. Organizers describe it as a FREE family-friendly event, with thousands of people in attendance, including recreational kites.

3. The event goes from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, but look for night kiters to light up the sky, plus many kiters stay through Monday for a little fun.

4. The location is behind the Thunderbird Beach Resort on Treasure Island, on 10700 Gulf Boulevard.

5. Although different from the one line of string most of us are used to when kite flying, it’s not impossible to learn how to use these sports kites; bring your patience and good humor. The festival brings together people from all over the country; competitors reunite and show off their latest tricks and personalized kites.
