A man on a motorcycle sustained life-threatening injuries when he was struck by a car Sunday afternoon.

St. Petersburg police say the accident occurred at the intersection of 1st Avenue North and U.S. 19. The motorcyclist was struck by a car turning left from U.S. 19 onto 1st Avenue as the bike entered the intersection.

The motorcyclist was described by police as a middle-aged man. He was taken to Bayfront Health Hospital for treatment. His identity has not been released.

The driver of the car was uninjured. However, a passenger in the car was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

The investigation is ongoing.

Traffic on U.S. 19 is blocked in both directions while investigators work the scene. Northbound traffic is blocked at Central Avenue, while southbound traffic is blocked at 2nd Avenue South. Traffic on 1st Avenue North is also blocked at U.S. 19.
