Citrus Memorial Hospital is now using some very cool technology to help save lives from a distance.

The hospital's emergency room is getting a helping hand from doctors located miles away when it comes to stroke patients. It's called Telemedicine, or in this case, Teleneurology.

When a patient showing signs of a stroke comes into the ER, a neurologist will be waiting on the computer screen ready to go and is prepared to order medicine if needed. They are available every day and around the clock. The computer can even be wheeled around the ER.

The ER staff at Citrus Memorial Hospital treats many stroke patients. Dr. Nima Mowzoon, who is based in Fort Myers and is one of the neurologists on call, says it's all about being fast.

"The whole point of a program like this is to bring the provider to the bedside immediately when the patient comes through the door," said Mowzoon.

Hospital CEO Ralph Aleman says this new way of doing things has already saved lives.

"We do have a lot of folks here that are in need of this kind of care," he said.

Hospital leaders say Citrus County has one of the highest death rates from stroke in the state and Teleneurology was an important investment in patient care.
