A man who got out of his car to inspect for damage along Interstate 4 in Polk County was killed in a multi-vehicle crash early Sunday.

Polk Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a fatal accident on Interstate 4 just after 5 a.m. According to deputies, the crash occurred on eastbound I-4 on the ramp to Highway 27 in Davenport, near mile marker 53.

Deputies said there was a three-car crash that prompted 74-year-old Joseph P. Riley to get out of his car to inspect for damage.

Riley, whose vehicle's lights had stopped working due to the impact, was struck by a 2013 BMW driven by 57-year-old Peter A. Moran, authorities said.

Impairment, driver fatigue and driver distraction are being investigated. A total of four vehicles were reportedly involved.

I-4 was reduced to one eastbound lane for about five hours at the scene of the crash.
