A seventh-grade student at a Tampa middle school was arrested Monday after school administrators found a handgun and live bullets in his backpack, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

Officials said the Tampa Police Department originally got a tip about the student over the prior weekend. The tipster said the student was selling drugs on school property and was known to carry a gun.

School administrators searched the student's property Monday and said they found a .380 semiautomatic pistol and two live bullets in the backpack. Hillsborough County Sheriff's school resource deputies arrested the student and transported him to the Hillsborough County Juvenile Assessment Center.

The student, who we are not naming in accordance with our crime guidelines, was charged with possession of a firearm on school property and minor possession of a firearm.
