17-year-old Caitlin Shannon is bringing some 'sparkle' to sick children this holiday season.

She visited pediatric patients at Tampa General Hospital Wednesday, giving out goodie bags filled with what she calls “sparkle.”

"The sparkles are the goodies in the bags and then my hope is that those goodies will give them the power to get through difficult round of treatment or a difficult day in general,” Shannon said.

Shannon started the nonprofit Sparkle Power, Inc. two years ago. She was inspired to create the charity after she spent more than a year in and out of the hospital following complications from a routine surgery.

"It used to be really hard for me to walk into the hospital because I was reminded of how I felt when I was a patient walking in for surgery or something like that," Shannon explained. "But now that I am on the other side it’s just really rewarding to see what you can do after a bad experience."

Five-year-old Brayden Scarsella got a goody bag from Shannon Wednesday. He has been hospitalized since Nov. 4, and his mom said it’s been difficult, especially with the holiday.

"It’s not easy being in the hospital for this long," Alex Scarsella said. "So little things like this that make his day are very much appreciated for sure."

Shannon has given out more than 1,000 goodie bags at hospitals across the Southeast.
