Much of the Florida Keys was evacuated before Hurricane Irma, but the jail is full... of animals.

  • Monroe County jail holding 250 animals
  • Creatures from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office Animal Farm
  • Animals include horses, alpacas, reptiles, a sloth and more

Horses, pigs, goats, alligators, snakes, turtles, alpacas and other animals in the care of the Monroe County Sheriff's Office now have holding cells inside the jail to ride out the storm.

The sheriff's office has a farm for abandoned, abused, confiscated or donated animals.

When the jail evacuated the 426 human inmates to Palm Beach county, the sheriff's office moved in their 250 animals.

The inmates helped wrangle the animals, crate them and get them inside, where there is plenty of food, water, hay and bedding.
